Cookies used on this edition
A cookie is a small text file a browser can store for a site. This edition uses very few. The choice to accept or refuse is remembered so the burnt-paper banner does not return on every page. Refusing does not block the ledgers, the journal, or the note form.
This page should be read with the privacy notice.
Types we use
Essential. The consent record itself, so we know whether to show the banner. Without it, the banner may appear again.
Analytics. None are set on this edition. If we add a visit count later, it will run only after Accept, and this table will name it.
We do not use advertising cookies. We do not drop trackers from social networks.
Table of cookies
| Name | Purpose | Duration | Provider |
|---|---|---|---|
| portalLayergrid_cookieConsent | Remembers whether you accepted or refused cookies, so the banner can stay closed | Until you clear storage, or twelve months, whichever you treat as the end | Portal Layergrid Analytics (this site) |
| (none at present) | Analytics cookies — not used on this edition | — | — |
The consent record is stored in localStorage under the name above, which behaves like a cookie for this purpose: it stays on your device and is not required for the site to function.
How to manage or disable cookies
Use Accept or Reject on the banner. You may also clear cookies and site data in your browser’s settings for portal-layergrid.digital. After clearing, the banner will return and ask again.
Most browsers let you block cookies entirely. If you do, the banner may reappear, and the optional visit count will not run. Reading and writing to the desk will still work.
Third-party cookies
Type is loaded from Google Fonts. That request may allow Google to see that a browser asked for fonts from this site. We do not control Google’s records. If that bothers you, a browser with fonts already on the machine will still show the text, though the newspaper face may fall back.
Images in ledgers and journal columns are requested from the public image host printed in each figure’s address. Those hosts may set their own cookies; we do not use them to follow you across other sites on our behalf.
If you disable cookies
You can still commission a study, read specimen plates, and send a note. You may see the cookie banner more often. There is no analytics count to lose on this edition.
